Page history last edited by ted.coopman@... 13 years, 6 months ago

Directions:

This workshop has online and in class components and consists of a self-paced slide show, tasks for you to complete and bring to class, as well as links and basic information below. The slides are available in Keynote and PDFs (PDFs are accessible for screen readers). These slides are plain and designed to download fast and simply provide you with information you need for this course.

Once you have looked over these slides, you need to make at least one comment below (100 word minimum) that directly address the slides content for workshop credit, ask questions, etc. There is also work that must be completed and brought to class.

While you are not quizzed on this workshop, you are responsible for using this information for your course projects. This is stuff you need to know. Refer back to these slides.

Every project starts somewhere. This workshop will guide you through the basics of setting up your research project and will help you to prepare for the more advanced workshops in Week 2.

This workshop was good. Most of it was just information I already knew from doing research papers in the past. I still found it to be very helpful though. One part of this workshop that I found to be the most helpful was step 3 which talks about having access to various resources. I will keep that in mind when I start to brainstorm on topic ideas. Overall, I like that this workshop was easy to understand and broke the subject matter down in steps. It certainly makes the task of finding a research topic much easier.

I really enjoyed the breakdown of the research questions: what might work, what might not work. Also how to be general but at the same time specific. This workshop got me excited to start thinking of my research project. I liked how in the workshop time management was expressed. We will not have time do find all the answers and really finalize this research project but getting it done is what is important. I hope my interests are accessible and practical as expressed in the workshop.

One thing that I definitely struggle with when it comes to research is being pragmatic. This workshop definitely opens my eyes and lets me become aware of what I shouldn't do, and of course that will become a crucial factor later on in the research. I like how it is emphasized that no one finishes researching, they are simply done working. Also, thinking of ideas and being creative with assignments can be a weak spot, so the examples gave me a general overview of what I should be thinking about. I'm for once excited about a research project, because what I choose is based off of what I actually want to know!

While most of the information was stuff I already knew, the breakdown of each element was helpful. It seems like it would be complicated to do interviews, or group experiments because it would take a lot of time to do correctly. It’s great that part of the assignment is due beforehand because you have more time to work on it. The workshop gave good ideas for where to start your research project.

We had already discussed pretty much everything from this workshop in class, but it's nice to have a written reminder of guidelines. The most important point I took away from this is, first and foremost, the topic I pick has to be something I like. This definitely means it will probably have something to do with hockey, so that's a good place to start. since the project also has to involve media, that narrows down my research options significantly, saving me the trouble of worrying what exactly to do my paper on.

I feel like we have discuss much of the information that was in the workshop already but it was nice to see it in an organized slide show. I can always go back and look at it if I need to find a new approach to my research. I thought it was useful to point out how to choose an appropriate topic by looking at the sources you have available to you. That can be one of the hardest parts about research papers and something I have struggled with in the past. The workshop was clear and not at all cluttered. It was pretty helpful.

I loved this Workshop the most because it brings all the other workshops together making it a lot easier to understand. I have some ideas for topics and questions but I'm working with two other people so, it will be interesting to see what they come up with as well. I find the step by step breakdown of the whole process to be extremely helpful, so I'm much more motivated and at ease with everything. I'm super excited to get started on the project now! Can't wait to have our in class discussions with you.

The workshop was interesting. It helped get me thinking about what kind of topics I am interested in and what I want to work on with my group. It is also helped me in understanding which method might best help me in gathering my data. I look forward to seeing the various topics that some up in class.

This workshop was straight forward and to the point, very effective in its purpose. Gave me a little bit more insight into what i want to write my topic on, and how i should focus my subject into a usable point that could be achievable. I worry that all of my topics will not have enough scholarly backing and my paper will rely heavily on data, i am not sure if this will weaken my paper or potentially make it stronger. I am eager to begin the process though and to start writing, all of my potential topics are things that i care about and have given thought to.

I really enjoyed this workshop. I felt like it was very short, yet is simple and taught me to remember that I make sure my research topic is something that I will enjoy writing about. When I'm preparing to start a research project, I always try to stay simple and organized, so as a result my paper and oral presentation will be the same way. The most helpful thing I took away from this workshop was to always have a topic or question that is reasonable, and that will be able to obtain enough information for the research project.

I found this workshop to be really helpful. First of all, I did not have a clue on what topic I should pursue or explore. Through the example given, I know have a clearer understanding on the process of researching and how to come up with a topic; In, which will involve the media of some sort. Also, I found it very interesting that the level of interest of my topic can affect the research process. Second, the pragmatic section will come in handy when I start my research. Although I have learn most of the information provided in the slides in previous courses, it was still helpful and a good review. Good job again on the slides.

This workshop made me think a lot about the subjects I can potentially use for my project. I like the quote “You are never finished, just done.” You can never be done with research, sure you could be done with the assignment, but assuming you’re doing a topic you like, chances are say for example, if you’re going to have a topic about social networking online, well, I bet the very next minute you’re done with this project your going to log on to Facebook. Also, the pragmatics slide gave me more insight on what topic I should be doing, which is something in media that peaks my interest. It managed to narrow down the topics I should be doing since I was unclear before I read the slide.

The workshop is very helpful for me though I have written some research papers before. The workshop is written briefly and specifically about what should I do when I am going to write a research paper. I especially like the Pragmatics Checklist when it points out some things to consider such as am I really interested in my topic?
where can I get the information to support for my answer?or do I have enough time to finish my research paper?those are very basic questions I should remember before doing a research project.

The most understandable and simple of all the workshops, I think. BUt yeah, only difficult part is coming up with a topic. Very true how this workshop tells us to pick something we would be interested in and not get bored of too easily. I'm having trouble coming up with something because I fear there might not be enough research on it. Well, it's okay. I still have about 11 hours to come up with some brainstorm ideas before class.

Though this workshop was simpler than most, it still helped me out a ton. It reminded me how crucial it is to choose a topic for a research paper. In the past I have chose topics that I liked and when i did the paper, I could barely right anything so it taught me that while it is best to do something you like it is good to know a lot about it and to learn things at the same time. I haven't had to do a research paper in a while so it is like a refresher course for me. I plan on doing more research and analysis this time around and this slide helped remind me how important it is. It's good to know that this slide is here if I need to go to it. This is the easiest workshop by far.

Overall, I'd say that this workshop was a good primer for our projects. It was a nice and quick run through of good ways to frame our questions for the projects. While the ideas presented here in the workshop weren't new to me, it really started to get me thinking seriously about what I'd like to do my project on. The emphasis on not trying to tackle too broad of a topic was good, certainly don't want to get too carried away. I think that the biggest take away I got from this workshop was that at the end of the day, I need to have a genuine interest in the topic I'm choosing to do research on.

This workshop was very helpful in assisting me to really beginning my research project. I think it was a good workshop that soothes the thinking process. A lot of the workshop was information and techniques that I already kind of new but there were a couple things I really did not think about. For one, I used to just pick a subject without even thinking about if I am really interested in the topic. In the past, I have chosen subjects that I got really tired of. Overall, this was a helpful workshop and I will definitely think things out before I pursue a subject.

This workshop was the easiest for me to follow thus far. I have been introduced to new topics with almost every workshop so far and this workshop was informative and very straight forward. I am looking forward to seeing if my topic that I have to write a research paper on for my ta 100w class will meet the guidelines for this class. Also, I am looking forward to seeing what topics the other students bring to class. I know that working on this project alone would be a challenge, but it would also allow one to take all the blame, or gain all the acclaim.

This workshop assignment was helpful in inspiring me to actually get up and start my research. It helped me decide to really try to tackle a topic that I am interested in and failiar with, instead of trying to do something that would prove to be too difficult of and undertaking. I want this project to be fun to me , instead of it being labor. I have decided to focus my paper on hip hop and teackle it from an interesting perspective and I know there are is a lot of info in the topic.
